Sea Stars (Ages 8-12)

Salish Sea Quest: Ocean Tech & Adventure Camp

Ages 8-12 • $595 • 35 hours over five consecutive days

Did you know that the moon has been explored more thoroughly than the ocean, including our own Salish Sea? Where people can't easily venture, technology takes the lead—think Mars Rovers, space probes, drones, and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). In this exciting week of marine engineering, your student will discover how innovation bridges the gap between human curiosity and unreachable depths.

Our CBC instructors team up with Western Washington University's CREST cohort to deliver a hands-on, unforgettable experience. Learn how First Nations engineered tools to harvest dentalium shells from the deep sea—an ancient currency—and collaborate with your team to design and build an ROV to explore the subtidal zone.

Your adventure doesn't stop there! When not in the classroom, students will spend their day kayaking, paddle boarding, or sailing on Bellingham Bay, enjoying all the thrills of our signature Adventure Camp. Are you ready to dive into ocean tech and uncover the mysteries of the Salish Sea?

Sign up for the Tidal Techs, AquaNauts or Kraken Mechanics groups. All sessions will run at the same time alternating who is in the classroom and who is on the water!

Each program is led by an ACA or US Sailing certified instructor.

This program is designed to be repeated. No experience necessary!

Adventure Camp

Ages 8-12 • $595 • 35 hours over five consecutive days

Sail, paddle and play all day on the bay!

In this all day adventure camp kids will learn the basics of cold water safety while trying out all the boats in our fleet. We’ll get out on the bay to sail, paddle or row, navigating to beaches where we’ll explore and learn about our marine world.

We know that process matters, which is why we focus our goals, games, and learning opportunities around individual and group development, and building self confidence while having fun. Our holistic approach will help your child form a lifelong connection to the sea by integrating elements of nature, science and mindful play.

Each program is led by an ACA or US Sailing certified instructor.

Junior Sailing Camps

Ages 8-12 • $595 • 35 hours over five consecutive days

Junior Learn to Sail Camp

This camp teaches the basics of sailing and will put kids at the helm of our RS Quest — a multi-handed boat that demands teamwork and good communication. Throughout the week we’ll cover all the skills needed to become independent sailors, including: rigging, sailing theory, hand exchange tacking, jibing, capsize recovery, docking, and conducting person overboard drills. Participants may also enjoy non-sailing activities such as paddling or land-based activities if weather conditions are not cooperative for sailing.

By the end of camp most sailors will be able to independently rig a Quest and sail it in light breeze. This camp is a good fit for brand new sailors and returning sailors alike.

Junior Intermediate Sailing

This class is for students that have taken one to two youth beginner sailing classes and feel comfortable steering the boat, trimming sails, and righting a capsize. This class will focus on solidifying the fundamentals taught in the youth beginner class while introducing intermediate concepts and challenging sailors to expand their skills.

If campers would like to rent a boat and sail on their own after participating in the Junior Learn-To-Sail camp, they will need to pass a skills test to show that they have developed and retained the necessary skills! We find that students are usually ready to pass the skills test after two sessions of this camp.

Each program is led by a US Sailing certified instructor.

Junior Explorers Camp

Ages 8-12 • $595 • 35 hours over five consecutive days

Explore Bellingham Bay and the Chuckanut Coastline in this all day cruising camp! Students will learn the basics of sailing on our 24’ keelboat while setting off on a new adventure each day.

Keelboats are large sailboats where students and instructors are all on the same boat. They are fun, fast, and require teamwork paired with strong communication. Sailors will try out all the different crew positions and even have a turn at the helm! Participants may also enjoy non-sailing activities such as paddling or land-based activities if weather conditions are not cooperative for sailing.

We know that process matters; that’s why we focus our goals, games, and learning opportunities around individual and group development, and building self confidence while having fun.
